Unfortunately, many drivers encounter unpaid tolls all the time, having not known outstanding violations were tied to their name. SunPass can be used on other tolls, giving you the chance to pass through their designated SunPass lanes. Any mismanagement of funds, however, can lead to unpaid passes halting the ability to take car of necessary renewals.
Unpaid tolls to SunPass, or to any Florida toll company for that matter, will result in a future registration hold.
To avoid the scenario entirely, take note of the following tips:
1. Know the Difference: MDX and E-PASS Aren’t SunPass
Too many Florida drivers confuse E-Pass and MDX passes with SunPass.
E-Pass only covers the Greater Orlando area, extending to Brevard, Volusia and Polk County. A SunPass, meanwhile, is a general toll coverage company for the entire state of Florida. An MDX pass, meanwhile, encompasses the Miami-Dade Expressway.
A lot of these toll areas cover SunPass but you should take care in distinguishing the lanes.
2. Your Account Information Might Be Incomplete
Even if you’re using a SunPass, it’s possible to pass through a toll without paying. Your account information can be incomplete, resulting in an inactive pass. Check the SunPass portal and look at your account information.
Double check that your address is correct and SunPass payment information (your credit/debit/checking numbers) are up to date. If you don’t, you might suffer a few toll violations—and you might lose your ability to renew other car tags in your name.
3. Your Unpaid SunPass Documents Can Be Sent to the Wrong Address
Do you move around often? Where’s your stable billing address? If you don’t pay a SunPass fine, your notification documents might never reach you.
SunPass documents are issued to your vehicle’s first-registered owner. It’s possible they’re being sent to a previous owner. Again, failure to pay any documents by their stated due dates can result in further accrual of violations.
4. Your Other Accounts May Be Unpaid
Because the Florida Department of Transportation enforces tolls across the board, you’ll need to assure complete compliance when paying your accounts. You might have satisfied your SunPass balance but MDX and E-Pass tolls might be left hanging. Failure to pay any of these Florida tolls will result in higher fees in the future. It might also grant DMV authority to put a registration hold on your vehicle’s license plate.
If you’re worried about unpaid SunPass fines, you can check the up-to-date status of your account here.
Make sure you’re up to date with any payments and frequently double-check your accounts. Trust us: The extra vigilance pays dividends in the long run.
It’s necessary for Florida drivers to monitor a number of toll pass entities but the micromanagement is worth it.
The aforementioned tips will mitigate future hassles regarding your SunPass account and potentially save numerous fines collectively with MDX, E-Pass, SunPass, and DMV registration renewal.
Pay a SunPass toll violation as quickly as possible and take extra care when driving through the Orlando or Miami Dade area.
If you find yourself faced with an unknown fine, don’t stress too much. Most providers understand if you can’t immediately pay a SunPass fine you didn’t even know you had.
Call SunPass at 888.824.8655, pay online, in person at a customer service center, or at another authorized merchant location.

I have a large amount past due in collections due too a difficult time we went thru and we didn’t pay. The issue is I cannot renew my tag until it is paid in full. I still drive daily to work and cannot add a responder and they keep sending the monthly dues to collection. It’s a never ending hole. In the meantime we have gotten 3 tickets for expired tags which I have paid.
I need help to either settle for a smaller amount I can pay off . No idea what to do. Help!
eTags is a car title and registration company, for Sunpass information better to visit their website. Their FAQ page talks about partial payments, that may be able to help you. Good luck.
Hello
We had a large amount of unpaid tolls that went to legal collection. I just paid them off. Can I renew online now? Or do I need to come in?
Hello,
Thank you for your comment. As long as the tolls have been paid and the VIN has been cleared with DMV, you’re all set to renew online. Here’s the state’s VIN check site. Just enter your VIN and if there are any outstanding tolls, you’ll see them at the top. I hope this helps!
If I have unpaid surpass and I want to renew my tags in a different state, will I be able to do it?
this sunpass article may help: https://www.sunpass.com/vector/invoices/TaxCollectorSearch.do?from=Home&locale=en_US
If I buy a new car with new tag
Will my old tag effect my tag
Back taxes and penalties from an old tag typically would not impact a new plate assigned to a new VIN, however, some suspensions and and tickets can affect the owners’ drivers license which may affect the ability to obtain a new plate. Also, it is important to remember that new license plates cost a one-time $225.00 charge above annual DMV fees, so there is an incentive to transfer an existing plate if the individuals have an existing one in their name to transfer to the new car.
What if you have a vehicle that has a plate that has toll fees that needs to be paid. You buy another vehicle and want to get a new plate and not transfer the old plate onto the new vehicle. Can I get a new plate and pay the fees for the other vehicle after?
Past due tolls are tied to the particular VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) associated with the plate in question. If you purchase another vehicle and obtain a new plate for that vehicle, it is unlikely this transaction would be impacted. Please keep in mind, the new plate fee in Florida is $225.00 in addition to annual fees.
If I buy a car and the person I bought it from has unpaid tolls on the car will I be able to get a new registration?
Every state has its own rules on that, in some they transfer over and in others it doesn’t. It’s best to check with your local DMV
Do I have repay if I tried to renew my tags through etags but was told that my registration was on hold? I already paid the tolls and the registration is clear to be renewed. Do I have to repay?
In Florida, eTags only charges your credit card IF your order was successfully renewed. If we were unable to process your order due to tolls, you will only be charged by eTags if you submit a NEW order. You can do this by visiting eTags.com. Your information from your earlier attempt should still show.
Perhaps you can call the car rental company you’re thinking of renting the vehicle from, let them know you have outstanding toll fees, and ask about the rules regarding that. There’s also some information on the FL DMV site that may be able to shed some light.

You would have to contact Sunpass directly, many times they can offer a payment plan. good luck!
I have a personalized tag from another state, and the website will not recognize it on line. How can I get a sun pass?
If you’re referring to the etags website, we won’t recognize the out of state plates for registration.
Hello, My car was totaled then i got a new car and new tag. If i turn in the tag for the car that was totaled do i still need to pay the tolls associated with the old tag.
Yes, you should pay all associated toll fees to prevent license suspension.
I just traded in my vehicle in to the dealer and I’m transferring the old tag to my new vehicle. The plate has an unpaid balance. Will I still be able to get it registered?
Hello James. If you have unpaid fees on your vehicle, you may not be able to register or renew your registration until you cover those pending fees.
I am buying a vehicle private party and the current owner said there could be some issues with the registration because of outstanding unpaid tolls. Is there somewhere I can look or someone I can speak with who can provide the details of how much money is owed to clear the registration? The current owner says he’s not sure who to pay.
Hello Dennis. Unpaid tolls are attached to the vehicle so the previous owner must fulfill those pending fees to avoid further complications when selling the vehicle.
Hello, Im doing my first tag, but I have been using many different paper tagand I ow a lot of tolls, will that hold my tag
Hello Francois. If you don’t pay your outstanding toll fees, the DMV may put your registration on hold which deters you from renewing your tags.
I paid all my toll fees, and they took out the money for my renewal registration already. What is my next step to receive my registration? All tolls are paid and I haven’t gotten an update as to when i’ll be receiving my registration.
Hello Yazlin! You will need to contact the DMV to verify the status of your vehicle. Note that it usually takes about a week to receive your new registration.
Hi my old car got repossed with the tag on it and it had unpaid tolls, Will I have a problem getting a new tag in my name? Since the old tag had a registration hold on it? I plan on paying what I owe
Hello Rebecca! It depends on the status of your license. Has your license been suspended? Find out here.
Is there any way to renew my registration, and pay my tolls after? I have a high balance, and my registration expires in 4 days, but I don’t have the money to pay all my tolls right now.
Hello Jennifer. In order to renew your registration you will need to pay any outstanding tolls as they might have your registration on hold.
I am trying to look up my account on MDX so i could pay my fine but it says no record found. But when i check my registration it clearly states it has a hold becaise of un paid tolls through MDX.
Hello Lanette. You will need to contact the MDX call center to find out whether you still have any unpaid outstanding fine.
Hello i own on my sunpass tolls is there any way i can be on some kind of payment plan to pay the remaining balance?
Hello Danail. You will need to contact Sunpass for more information about unpaid tolls. Note that a registration hold can be placed on your license plate if you fail to pay those fees.
I have no unpaid tools but yet sunpass still has a hold on my registration?!?
Hello Michelle. To solve this problem you will have to contact Sunpass to verify whether you have any outstanding fees.
I bought a car and purchased sunpass and later accumulated toll debt and never paid it. The car was later totaled and junked. I no longer have the tag but still owe money to that tag and that registration. But I am going to be purchasing a new car, will the money I owe to one tag and registration affect me from getting a new tag and registering this new car?
Hello Nick. Unless you open a new account with a new license plate, you will have no problems, otherwise they can easily track that you have outstanding violations fees.
I bought a car, purchased sunpass amd later accumulated toll debt. The car was later totaled and junked. I no longer have the tag and did not pay my tolls. Will this affect me from registering a new car and getting a new tag for said car?
Hello Nick. Unless you open a new account with a new license plate, you will have no problems, otherwise they can easily track that you have outstanding violations fees.
Hello,
I’ve just recently paid my debt to MDX and they had since released the hold on my tags. I put in a request to renew my tags the same day at etags. Later I got an email saying my order has been cancelled due to a hold on my registration. Do I have to go into dmv with the printed email receipt to be able to renew my tags? Or is there a way to be able to do it online again?
Hello Julie. Since you’ve already use our online service, please contact us at 1-800-633-5332 or send us an email at support@eTags.com for more specific information about your renewal request.
I had a joint title with an ex and in april transferred the title to their name only. I am still receiving their tolls in the mail.
Hello Elle. Perhaps the other person hasn’t register the car on their name. You could check the status of the vehicle by running the VIN number and find out what’s going on.
If I have a registration hold on my car and I want to seller is the registration hold on the tag or on the title of the car and is that person going to have an issue registering the car in their name
Hello Marcello. If you have accumulated unpaid SunPass tolls, your registration stays on hold but you can sell your vehicle. Having a hold on your registration means that it affects your tags and your driver’s license (if not paid over the long run). The new owner to which you are selling the vehicle won’t be affected.
Hello. I have a stop registration on a vehicle. I totaled a vehicle and transferred my transponder to the new vehicle without knowledge of this being prohibited. I was permitted to apply funds to surpass and they depleted as I passed through tolls so I thought it was ok. But, it wasn’t. Anyway, I need transportation to get to work. Is there any programs that will permit one to arrange payment arrangements and lift the stop registration? If not, why?
Hello Sheldon. You’ll need to contact SunPass in order to discuss how you are planning to pay any outstanding fees with them. Click here to check on their contact details.
I owe tolls on a tag and I was wondering if I can transfer a new tag that I have to that vehicle while I pay off what I have on the other tag
Hello Valeria. You could change your license plate or tags as much as you want but your registration remains the same. Not paying your tolls keep your registration on hold and you are required to pay them so you don’t have problems later on.
If your tolls was placed in collections. El that still cause a registration hold?
Hello Latoya! Yes.You will need to clear them first so they don’t keep your registration on hold.
If I have still Owe sunpass money on a truck that I gave back to the dealer and is no longer registers to my name will I be able to register a new vehicle on my name ?
Hello Celia. Anything you owe to SunPass is attached to your vehicle. You shouldn’t have any problem registering your new vehicle but you are advised to contact you local DMV for more information about vehicle registration.
If you owe tolls will you be able to renew your drivers license?
Hello Jennifer. You may not be able to renew your driver’s license if they put a hold on your registration. Visit the Driver’s License Checker to find out whether you could renew it or not.
I’m trying to figure out how much I owe for sunpass so I can pay it ,so I can renew my tag.
Hello Mallie. Have you contacted SunPass directly? It may be that they put a hold on your vehicle registration owing to SunPass violations or bills. Always double-check.
Does the unpaid tolls stay with a tag or stay with the vehicle registration.
Hello Mark! Not sure about your question but tag and vehicle registration are the same.
I understand a stop on a renewal, but I have a somewhat technical question! If you get a total loss of your vehicle that was financed, you purchase a new vehicle with new financing, they give you a “REPLACEMENT TAG”, because the original one is damaged, you are 3 months away from “RENEWAL TAG” time, is there a stop on a REPLACEMENT as well as a RENEWAL? And if it is, where do we have that written or stated in the “law”? And what are our thoughts on it………should there be a stop on a REPLACEMENT TAG because of unpaid tolls, especially with given circumstances?
And this is based on having a “RENEWAL STOP” in effect right now or currently……key note!
Hello Sheldon. For that matter, here’s a link that helps you access information about your tag for unpaid tolls along with a contact number so you could ask any question in regard to your case.
