What Kinds of Vehicles Need A Car Title In Alaska?
A title is issued to track ownership of many different types of vehicles and boats. It is not the registration. The registration is the legal name of the license plate number associated with you and your vehicle.
If your vehicle has an engine and/or wheels, it likely requires a title including cars, pickups, mobile homes, ATV’s, manufactured homes, and trailers. A camper shell does not require a title.
What Are The Title Transfer Requirements For Alaska?
In order for an Alaska title transfer to be completed, the buyer needs to bring the following documentation to a DMV office or an authorized Business Partner:
- The completed title signed by all sellers and buyers.
- An odometer verification.
- A bill of sale.
- Their driver’s license.
- Completed Application for Title and Registration.
- Payment for the title transfer.
You have 30 days after the date of purchase to complete this task.

How To Transfer A Title In Alaska when Living In A Remote Area
If you live farther than 50 miles from a DMV office connected by a road or if there is no road that connects you to the city, you are considered to be living in a Remote Area.
You are eligible to complete a transfer of title through the mail.

If your ZIP code is not in the Remote Area as set by the DMV, the envelope and contents will be returned to you unprocessed.

Who Needs To Sign The Application For Transfer Of Title?
Both the buyer and seller must sign an Alaska title transfer. If there are two people listed on the original title, both must sign it as a seller.
If the buyer wants more than one person listed on the new title, both must sign the old title and any bill of sale.
Can You Transfer The Registration?
It is possible to transfer plates as well as the title in Alaska. You will complete the Application for Title and Registration and state that you wish to have the plates transferred.
