Let’s be real about something today: how many of us depend on auto-renew, auto-pay, and auto-fix just about everything? In this day and age, when just about every inch of our lives is automated, how many of us think about subscriptions or deadline? You can pay your credit cards with automatic draft, you can pay your Netflix bill by recurring charge. Our water bills, electricity, insurance, mortgage, gym memberships; most of us have all these repeat payments set to engage on their own.

And truthfully, this can be a real aid. Considering the ultra-busy lives so many of us lead, setting up an automatic process can save us the headache of lapsed insurance or missed installment. Not for nothing, we know a thing or two about surprise late fees, and let’s just say, it’s not the kind of surprise we love.
So if all your bills and clubs are programmed to take care of themselves, so to speak, it’s possible that one renewal may have slipped your mind. In and among all the other bills that magically mind their business for you, comes the issue of registration renewal. Because renewing a vehicle registration cannot be set to autopilot, it’s something that must be remembered and tended to in good time.
Today we’re going to hone in on the state of Maryland and what is required to facilitate a registration renewal in the Old Line State.
Because we know that when it comes to details like DMV paperwork, things can sometimes get hairy. And here at eTags, we are expert detanglers, if you will!
Even though you cannot set your vehicle registration to renew on its own – not everything can be Amazon Prime, right? – the Maryland Motor Vehicle Association (MVA) will send out a renewal notice to you approximately sixty (60) days before your registration is set to expire. The notice will be sent by mail (remember that old thing with envelopes and stamps?) and will include all the necessary and pertinent information regarding the renewal process.
The MVA allows folks to choose whether they want to renew their registration for one year or for two years – the decision is entirely up to you. And if you happen to opt for a two-year reg and it turns out that you won’t be using the second year, there are possible refund options available to you as well.
Also, it’s nice to know that registrations can be renewed in Maryland in several different ways. If the vehicle ready for renewal is a passenger car, truck, SUV, motorcycle, or trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 55,000 pounds or less, you have several methods of renewal open to you.
Keep in mind though, that you (and your vehicle) must meet certain criteria. Those factors are:
- The vehicle registration must be set to expire within the subsequent two months or have already expired
- If you’ve moved recently, your address must already be updated in the MVA online system before beginning your renewal process
- You will have to be clear of any outstanding violations such as parking/traffic tickets, insurance lapses, or other issues
Once you are certain that you meet the qualifications for renewal options, you may proceed to choose one of the following possibilities:
- Mail – by completing and returning the notice you received from the MVA along with any necessary corrections and a check or money order. The MVA does not accept cash by mail
- MVA kiosk – with ten branches available, you can renew at any one of these locations as long as you have all the pertinent insurance information and a credit card.
- In person – of course you can always elect the old-fashioned route and make your way to an MVA office to complete your renewal face to face. Be sure to bring along your notification of renewal, your insurance details, and a form of payment (credit, cash, or check).
- The following option has slightly different requirements, so please take heed!
- Phone – if your vehicle has a GWVR of 10,000 pounds or less, you have the option to renew your registration by placing a call to 1-410-768-7000. Please note that you cannot correct any information or detail over the phone. If there is something that requires adjustment, you will need to choose another route for renewal.
Of course our favorite way to renew registration in the state of Maryland is…you guessed it…online!
At eTags we help folks with this task hundreds of times per day, and it’s something we love to do. The process is fast, easy, efficient, and will have you on your way in no time.
How does it work, you ask? Simply. Here’s what you do:
Head over to our website at www.etags.com. There, from the drop-down menu that reads, Select Your State, choose Maryland. The very first option on the top of the list will be Renew Registration. Click on it and then hit Continue. From there, you will be prompted to enter in some required information. The page will ask for your license plate number or vehicle identification number (VIN).
Once those details are accepted, you will then be prompted to fill in other relevant information such as your contact particulars, ownership elements, insurance details, as well as your legal address. Remember, your address must be current with the MVA in order to renew your registration!
The way we see it is this: since you can’t set your reg renewal to automatic, we are the Next Best Thing.
And the entire renewal process with eTags couldn’t be simpler. Really. But if you’re wondering about the step-by-step, or have any questions regarding online registration renewal, (or any other tag and title queries), feel free to give us a shout. We want to assist you in any way possible.
