Extra features
Apart from having a new look, driver’s licenses will be getting new features, which allows the cars to be more tampered-resistant and avoid counterfeiting. These security features are aligned with the federal requirements that requires driver’s to use those new licenses as a form of identification.
Key requirements to get a new license
This license, also known as compliant card, comes with specific requirements, which are mandatory. Those requirements include full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, and home address.
In the old days, the traditional way required drivers to carry their personal information from their old cards, and hand them to the agency. With this new method, drivers are expected to provide birth certificate and other documents as a proof of identity.
Whether you cannot or don’t want to provide the specific documentation, you can always request a standard, or “non-compliant” card. There’s no restriction to that but non compliant cards could only be used for age verification, but it will not be enough to pass TSA pre-check at the airport, or visit a military base.
No more at-the-counter driver’s license services
This is an important step as it is part of the overall upgrade and change in the pursuit of higher security actions. However, you are still required to complete the necessary paperwork at the local agency, take a picture, and pay the renewal fee.
The cards, though, will be printed at the central location and then be mailed to your specified mailing address.
What are the benefits of this new centralized change?
The benefits are specified below:
- New equipment will be installed at a more secure space on every individual agency.
- Easy for double-checking and verifying key information at the central office.
- Easy printing and delivery of licenses from one location point.
- Drivers will get a temporary card while waiting for their provisional licenses in 2-week time period.
Starting date
This change will start on July 2nd of this year, and will be compulsory for federal identification purposes kicking off October 1st, 2020. There’s still time but considering the renewal process, it is advisable to take care of this procedure promptly.
