Can I get an extension to renew my tags. I live in Baltimore MD. We are going through financial issues and cannot pay for my renewal right now.
Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, MVA doesn’t offer any extensions. You won’t incur any more fees after it’s expired however you do run the risk of being pulled over by the police for an expired tag. This will inevitably cost you more in the end. I’m sorry there’s not better news. Good luck!
I paid for my car registration renewal almost 15 days ago online and I haven’t received it.
We see that you placed an order with us in 2020 but you do not have a recent order with eTags. If you renewed your registration directly with the MVA, there may be delays in mail delivery and you may still soon receive it. If you have urgency to have your registration in hand, you may place an order on eTags.com for a replacement registration which would arrive in 3 to 5 business days.
my car went thru inspection failed had repairs and has passed from everything i can find the inspections place sends word to the mva and they will ship my full registration or am i missing something ?
Once you pass inspection, the owner is given paperwork and the inspection station sends a digital copy to the MVA. Now you can go into the Mva/Tag and Title company to get 1 or 2yr registration. You can also register online with eTags
I renewed my registration on line and charged the $161.50. Everything went through with no problems. Today I received my registration certificate and in the space for fee it states $0. Shouldn’t it say $161.50?
We’re not sure who you renewed your registration with as we’re a private company.
Hi I renewed my tags sticker, but I sent it to the wrong address that I no longer live at, I updated my mva address, so how can I go about re ordering the stickers without paying 5$?
If you ordered with Louisiana DMV, pls contact them directly as we are a private registration company online and operate a tad differently.
Hello, I have to renew my registration in May of this year. I have handicap tags and this is my first time renewing my registration with handicap tags. What are the costs for the renewal and how often do I go through the emissions?
Hey there, A permanent placard is valid for 4 years. A temporary placard is valid for a minimum of 3 weeks and a maximum 6 months.
Renewing placards. Permanent placard owners will receive a notice for renewal by mail. They must verify the information on the renewal notice, state the change in address or mailing address, sign the application, and mail it to the address provided above. You can renew registration online at https://www.etags.com/app/md?utm_source=blogquestion
you can also visit the MDOT MVA online: https://mva.maryland.gov/vehicles/Pages/licenseplates/disabled-license-plate.aspx
I have purchased a used Truck from Delaware. I live in Maryland and have temporary registration for the truck in MD. I have passed inspection and my information was sent to the mva by my inspection station. My Registration is expiring. I tried to renew the registration On the MVA website and I saw this – Hold Title – NMVTIS Review –. What does this mean? I also have not received my title for the truck and it’s been 7 weeks. Any help?
Hey there, eTags is a privately owned company, we are not the MVA however this webpage (paragraph 3) may be able to answer your question. You can also contact the MVA directly for more details. https://giada.org/answering-questions-on-state-issues-and-title-paperwork/#:~:text=Review%20title%20status%20on%20a,the%20document%20or%20control%20numbers.
I have a temporary registration that will expire at the end of December. I was finally able to complete the repairs to get my car to pass the state inspection and it did. Can I renew my registration online, or do I have to go to the local MVA.
When I tried to renew the registration I saw this – Hold Title – NMVTIS Review – I am not sure what it means, and I want to register for 2 years. Not sure how to proceed at this point.
You will have to go into a MVA to renew the first time after the inspection. But then, you can renew online. Check the MVA appointments before you go…https://mva.maryland.gov/Pages/default.aspx
I bought a used vehicle and the temp plates expired on 02 Sept. I called the dealer and they explained do to COVID that I could drive with the expired temp plate until the registration and plates come from my home state of Arkansas. Is this correct that I can continue to drive on the expired temp plate? If so for how long?
eTags doesn’t operate in Arkansas. Check your local DMV to see what their regulations are regarding COVID https://mydmv.arkansas.gov/
I have owned my motorcycle for 8 years. 3 years ago I turned in the tags and stopped insurance due to not riding. Now that I’m ready to begin riding again and I still own the vehicle do I have to get the motorcycle re-inspected before getting tags?
The vehicle should be re-inspected due to non-use over the years. Maryland requires every car registered in the State to pass an emissions. At some point during your two-year registration period, you’ll receive a notice from the MVA requiring you to have your vehicle emissions inspected.
I recently moved back to MD after living in CA for almost 2 years. I purchased my vehicle new in MD the year before I left for CA. Now that I am back, do I need to do a state inspection and VEIP for my car?
Contact the MVA to inquire about everything you would need before going there. With COVID-19 happening, we’re not sure how it’s impacting requirements, deadlines and such.
hi i mailed in my registration renewal for boat trailer 2 weeks ago and still have not received my new tag sticker or registration how long does it take to get in mail ?
We’re not sure who or what company you mailed it to, but it’s best to contact them to get details.
My daughter received plates that expired in 30 days because she needed to get the vehicle inspected. Her dad is still not done with completing the repairs and the tags are now expired. My concern is my daughter getting pulled over for driving on expired tags. Is she able to contact the MVA and request an extension for her Maryland temporary tags?
According to the MVA, it seems like you’re only allowed one extension but perhaps you can try contacting them directly. Here’s an article that can help
https://mva.maryland.gov/Pages/temporary-registration.aspx#:~:text=You%20must%20complete%20the%20Temporary,of%20any%20full%20service%20office.
Have a non operating motorcycle that’s been sitting in my garage. I haven’t renewed the registration in 4 years and did not return tag. I Finally decided to junk it because I don’t have the time to get it up and running. Will I have to pay any fees when I turn in the plates even tho it wasn’t operational for that period of time?
If you, the customer, has kept insurance the entire time you had the tags then there will be no fee when you turn them. If you had a lapse in insurance during that time then the MVA will let you know any fees you will owe.
So the vehicle inspection station we used is being really ridiculous, failed the car for a dented AC condenser. Car runs good, no codes and no warning lights. The inspector said to pull it out as much as we could, but how do we know how far is enough. When looking at the inspection checklist online this is not listed as an inspection item, he has it listed in the remarks column. Can we take the car to another inspection station? Where do we file a complaint about an inspection station?
The Inspection Station are an independent company that works with the MVA. They set their own standards and policies. So, any issues with the station will have to be taken up with them.
If I turn in a tag about a year ago and want to retag it do I need to get it reinspected if the car was never out of my name on the title?
The MVA will be better suited to answer this question. Please contact them for further details.
Hello,
I bought a new car in May. I paid for tag and title and was given 60 day temp tags by the dealer. The dealer told me the MVA will mail the hard tags to the dealership and they will call me when it comes in. I called the dealership a month after and they said things are just slow cause of Covid-19. But another month has gone by and my temp tags are about to expire. What do I do?
Please contact the dealership that you purchased the vehicle from, and inform them of the issue. Covid-19 has impacted the timetable on daily services. But the dealership is the only place I know who can solve this issue.
Hello, we moved within Maryland recently. If we change the address for our driver’s license, should we also change the address on our vehicle title and registration? and how should we process it? Thanks
You can fill out a change of address form online with the MVA. And once you do that, then all the addresses will automatically change on the other documents. If you wanted new documents with the new address, then you would have to pay for duplicates after they change the address.
I am staying at an alternative address (in another state) during COVID and my tags will be expiring. How do I get my registration card and stickers to the address I am staying at?
Hey there, eTags operates online for registrations. We also ship to different addresses, so you’ll be able to get it wherever you want. You can go to

Hi,
Have a car that hasn’t been driven since 2018. Last emissions were done in May 2017 – and the plates expired in May 2019.
Are there late fees associated with not getting emissions checked for a year if I want to start driving the car again?
You would have to visit a full service MVA to get everything updated and an extension to get the emissions done, to get the car back on the road. All fees will be told to you by the Mva and emissions locations.
My Tags expired Mar 31 – it does not allow renewal online “says this transaction is not allowed online” and no one respond to the MVA number. I took appointment online. This is all due to COVID and state of emergency. Is there a way i can renewal before the appointment date 7/23 and will be there be a fine to renewal??
Have you tried doing your renewal online with eTags http://www.etags.com/app/md?utm_source=blog%20question
I have been staying out of stay so to Covid and my vehicle registration has expired. I’ve tried to renew online and haven’t had any success and the phone isn’t being answered.
Hey there, on our end there are no technical issues that we’re aware of, try again by visiting http://www.etags.com/app/md?utm_source=blogquestion
Make sure all fields are entered correctly. It’s possible for a reason or another, that you’re not eligible to use our website and may have to go thru the MVA.
I bought a used car to a private. I have all documents available (inc inspection) but seems this case is not part of MVA online service ?
I need to register the title to my name and i new plates.
should i request an appointment for this case to manage it as it’s not a renewal.
Thanks for your help.
schedule an appointment to have the car titled in your name and get new tags.
I was on MD kiosk yesterday to change my address but I forget to get my paper over there. When I came back was not there. If someone take it , could I have any problem with that?
If you did a change of address on the kiosk, it wouldn’t have printed out a paper. They will send you two change of address cards to keep with your DL/ID in the mail.
I went online and paid for a 1year registration, it was taken out from my bank but I can’t seem to get a copy of a temporary registration card. It says I still owe $135.00 but its paid for. What do I need to do?
Contact the agency or MVA you used for the services and explain your situation.
What do I do if my registration is expired by 18 months? Am I no longer able to renew?
Any registration expired over a year can only be renewed at a MVA in person.
I have not renewed my tags since 2014 (Motorcycle), but always paid my insurance. Where can I find any information on additional fees I may need to pay? Also, what forms do I need?
Any fees or forms you’ll will can only be determined by the MVA.
I bought a new car and my temp tag expired. Wasn’t I supposed to receive my new plates in the mail or was I supposed to go to the MVA to pick them up? All locations were closed due to COVID-19.
If you have temp tags then you would need to got the MVA with the inspection and get the new tags/stickers. They’re now taking appointments.
Looking to renew my registration, but the online option says I am not eligible and must contact MVA. Is there a particular number to call, as when I call the 410 number, it says the MVA is closed.
Hey there, there can be a number of reasons why “not eligible” shows up. It is something that you’ll first have to fix with the MVA. They are reopening by appointment on June 8. Here’s a list of all MVA branches, hope this helps. https://mva.maryland.gov/Pages/covid-19.aspx
can i get insurance in md without a current registration
eTgas doesn’t handle car insurance, but according to Maryland lawyers online: “Drivers must have proof of this basic insurance coverage before they can even register a vehicle.” Here’s the article: https://www.traublaw.com/maryland-car-insurance-requirements/
I never received a notice that my registration needed renewed. I happened to look at my tags and saw they were due up at the end of the month. I ordered my new registration and stickers online on May 2 and you took money out May 4 and I still haven’t received them. Mine is due up at the end of this month. I know people who ordered after me and have received theirs already.
what is your order id, full name and email associated with it all?
I want to turn in my wife’s vanity tags due to the cost. I’m up for registration so it’s making me pay the full 2 years with the vanity tag. Should I just pay and request new plates? If I do that will I get a credit back from MVA?
During normal times (pre-pandeic), you would have to vanity plates into a MVA and trade them for regular plates when they renew. But due to the current situation, we would advise to call the MVA and inquire on how to go about it.
I was informed that my tags were going to be suspended as of April 3rd 2020 because of non emission. The emission station was closed in march when I went to get my vehicle done. how do I find out if my tags were suspended I have not received anything and I can’t call because office is now closed .
you can go on the Mva website and put your information in to see if it’s suspended or not. Or call them as well.
My Maryland month sticker is starting to peel off. I’ve been trying to find a way to get a replacement online due to the lockdown and I’ve found that a month sticker is free. However, every time I apply for a replacement sticker on the MVA website, it keeps charging me. Is the month sticker free or not and where is the application for it. For clarification, I already have the new 2-year registration sticker, I’m just looking for the month. Thank you!
Usually how it works is if you needed a month sticker you would be able to just go into a MVA and get one for free. But due to the current situation, they don’t have that option. Only time the MVA would add the month sticker is if you ordered replacement tags from them. Maybe try calling the MVA or sending an email to customer service to see what you can do.
I want to return my tags to stop paying insuarance, because I am not using my care due to the coronavirus and unemployment. Can you simply mail my tags? How much will it be to get tags again when things with this Pandemia improve?
Because of the current situation, we don’t know exactly know how to go about tag returns. we believe that you can still mail them in to the headquarters of the MVA. Try to contact them
Registration renewal was sent beginning of June by mail. Tags expire 6/30 – no stickers or new registration card yet. Tried checking on eTags to see if the info updated there – not able to inquire. Have emailed directly to MVA – no response. All lines by phone are busy all the time. What a mess!!! Can’t drive my car as of tomorrow and can’t find out how to get the stickers!! You cashed my check already!!! Can’t even get a receipt until the stickers come in!
can u pls send over the order number connected to this?
I was gifted a car and need to get tags and title for it. I’m going to only use it at our vacation home. Can I register it in that county or do I need to register it in the county in which I live?
You can register it in the county where your vacation home is as long as you can provide proof of residence for that home like a lease agreement or utility bill.
If a vehicle has a handicapped tag does it still need to renew registration every two years
As per the MVA, “Disability plates expire every two years (like all license plates) and are renewed in the same manner as all plates. You will be notified by mail approximately 2 months before they expire.” Read more at :
http://www.mva.maryland.gov/about-mva/info/27300/27300-02T.htm
If I’m currently visiting from Arizona to help my sick grandma and my registration is expiring next month and I need emissions done can I get this done here in Maryland to renew my registration in Arizona?
You can try going to the MVA website and do a “VEIP Extension.” But only if you didn’t do an extension with it already. After you get a VEIP Extension you can renew your tags for the car and have the new stickers shipped to you in Arizona. You would need to wait at least a week after doing the VEIP Extension on the MVA Website before you can renew with etags.
Is there a waiver or temp tag i can use to get my vehicle to an emission station? Tags expired and are suspended while traveling for work.

I recently renewed my car registration and I got the tag in the mail. However, I have changed my insurance provider. Do I need to inform the DMV, or is it sufficient to just carry the proof of Insurance in the car?
You don’t have to, your insurance provider is responsible for contacting DMV and letting them know. If they don’t, you can just show proof to MVA when needed.
My husband bought a used truck in Sept…he paid title tax and other fees to the dealer at the time of purchase. Now, 4 months later hes gotten a registration renewal notice with the fee listed as $1297.00! I have no idea what its for or why in the world it’s so high. What possible “fees” could be included above the usual registration cost?
Usually the cost has to do with the “Weight” and “Type” of vehicle it is. The heavier the vehicle, the more the registration usually is for the customer. Also, the cost breakdown should be shown on the renewal/reg. If you believe that the price is too high or off then call the MVA to get a better explanation of it.
Hello, I have moved from Md to Dc and now I’m moving back to MD. I need to switch my license plate tags, drivers license, and all back to MD. What all do I need to have in order to do so and roughly how much would it be?
this link can help clarify the process:

I currently have temp tags in Maryland that expired, can I apply for historic tags for the same vehicle without getting an inspection? Do I have to turn in my old tags?
Typically, no. There are exceptions for historic cars but you’ll still need to get the vehicle inspected.
My mother is a co signer on my car. I have a few flag fees associated with our car. She has to renew her tags for her own personal car. Will my flag fees prevent her from renewing her tags?
We’re not licensed in Louisiana so it’d be best for you to contact your local office of motor vehicles
I am out of town temporarily and need to renew my tag that expires 11/19. If paid online will they mail sticker to my temporary address her in Mississippi. I am afraid if I use my permanent address it will cause a delay because I will then have to get a family member to send it to me
If you renew online with the MVA, you’ll need to change your address with he MVA before ordering a renewal. With etags.com/app/md, there’s no need for a change of address, just let us know where to send it.
Hi,
My son was pulled over for driving without current plates and tabs. The registration doesn’t expire until the end of the year but the month on the tag was incorrect. It seems like the police should have known that the registration was active. Does he need to go to court for that?
Yes the cop would know it’s active, but by law you’re required to have a current plate and sticker so they can cite you for it.
Hello. I have renewed my tags but I havent received my stickers yet and I have recieved a ticket for expired tags can I fight this in court?
Most likely you can fight it in court if you can prove that you renewed your tags in time (but just didn’t get the stickers yet)
How much can two yrs tag cost for 2016 Ford Fusion was bought from auction $2365

And a two year registration for $135
I have a car that expires tomorrow. It has insurance but as it’s no longer being driven, can I just leave it as is? I plan on fixing it so that I can take it to carmax later to sell it. Do I have to return the plates? Will I be penalized if I dont return plates?
You can contact your local DMV and report your car as a non-operational vehicle.
My registration expires at the end of the month (Sept) and I was wondering if I would be able to request an extension or a temporary sticker?
eTags doesn’t provide registration extension services. Try contacting your local DMV, or visit this website for information

I ordered my new registration online and printed the temporary registration but it expires tomorrow and i have not uet received the new sticker what do i do?
Hi Angela, we understand it may not be an option but, if you can avoid driving the car, that would be the best option since you can be ticketed for not having the most current plate sticker even if it is up to date. That being said, any officer who runs your plate will be able to see that you are renewed and the temporary copy is supporting proof. Call or email our support team if you have any other questions.
My Son Used The Machine To Renewal His Stickers When They Printed Out His Stuff They Only Have Him The Year Sticker. Does he Need the Month Sticker.
Hello Kelley. Vehicle registrations in MD last a year, which means that you’ll receive year stickers. There’s no need to get monthly stickers as it won’t impact your registration period.
I have 2 admin flags on my old car that was totaled, I have just purchased a new vehicle out of state which Currently has temp tags. It passed PA inspection but I had to get New brakes for it to pass Maryland inspection which caused a delay due to costs. Now that it has passed inspection and I’ve submitted the paperwork to the dealer roughly how long will that take, as my temp tags expire August 20th. Also will those admin flags carry over to my new vehicle and new registration even though there are no flags on my license?
Hello Mark. Unfortunately, we are not associated with the DMV in PA to give you a date on your request. You will need to contact them and verify the status of your vehicle either over the phone or in person.
I was provided a temp tag by the dealership when I purchased my car in MD. They were processing my paperwork for DC tags, where I reside. The process has been delayed and they’ve had to send me a second MD temp tag which expires in a few days. They said they can no longer provide me with any additional temp tags. What are my options so I don’t end up with expired tags?
Hello Nina. From the information you have provided you may be required to contact your local DMV agency in DC to find out about the status of the vehicle. As they appear to be processing your tags, you need to make sure they have the right information to avoid further delays for information you could have already updated.
Remember you are not allowed to drive a vehicle with expired tags. Good luck.
I have tickets that i cant pay right now, and my registration is up in May can i get an extension or can i get a temporary tag, i dont want to get in trouble for driving on suspended registration. I didnt realize i had 2 tickets and im unemployed.
Hello L. You will have to contact your local DMV agency but keep in mind that registration renewals are mandatory and you don’t want to get another ticket for driving a vehicle with expired tags.
I am in charge of our commercial fleet. I received a renewal notice for one of our vans and it stated the fee would be $107, but when I went online the fee doubled to $214 during checkout. Why is this? Is the fee per year?
Hello Russell. It may be that you are renewing your registration for two years. The MVA website only offers bienal renewals to residents in MD though. Did you know that eTags offers online vehicle registration renewals in MD? All you need to do is visit our portal and follow the instructions as required. Our online service offers a convenient platform that will let you renew your tags without having to arrange in-person visits to the DMV. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Customer Support or call us at 1-800-633-5332. We are glad to assist you on this procedure.
Hello,
I have 2 questions:
1) My registration expires 6/19, does that mean I have to get the new ones before June or before the end of June?
2) I renewed my registrations online and I did not get a temporary registration to print, is that because my current registration doesn’t expire until 6/19 or should I contact MDOT?
Thanks.
Hello Julius. If your registration expires by 6/19, you are required to renew it by the end of the month. Now, you won’t get a temporary registration since your current registration hasn’t expired yet.
I was told that MD no longer requires a month sticker? That can’t be right?
Hello Carl. Maryland no longer requires month stickers but annual ones.
I received 30 day temp tags and registration to get my car inspected in September. The 30 days was up in October of this year. I’ve come to find out I need a lot more work done mechanically before it will pass inspection. So I had to travel back and forth to work. This am I was stopped and arrested for the expired temp tags and they also confiscated my tags and towed my car. Is there ANY WAY I can apply for another temp registration in Maryland for the 30 days? Bc I cant drive it to get it inspected w/o tags and I cant take it off the tow yard w/o tags? What do I do?
Hello Stephanie. You will need to contact the DMV to check the status of your vehicle and cover the fines for driving with an expired registration. You will need to obtain a new registration in order to have your vehicle completely inspected.
I have MVA fees because my car was sitting with the tags an no insurance. I wanted to get another car from a dealership. Will I be able to, and will I be able to get the tags for it before paying my MVA fees?
Hello Corey. It depends on the status of your license. You will need to contact your local MVA agency for further information.
Is the expiration at the beginning or end of the month, ie 11/19 is this good until 12/19?
Your vehicle registration expires every one or two years fat the end of the exp.month, but you’ll get a renewal notice 2 months before the expiration date. You can renew your registration online here by selecting “renew vehicle registration” https://www.etags.com/app/md?utm_source=blog%20comment&utm_term=%7Bkeyword%7D
I need to renew my tags but I have flag fees and unpaid tickets if I pay my tickets is there going to be a way for the MVA to be informed since they are closed? Or can I just pay the flag fees without paying the tickets.
You will have to pay all the tickets first. Then allow 3-7 days for it to update in the MVA system usually. Then pay the Flags and renew at the same time. But only through the MVA website. If you want to use etags.com/app/md, then all Flags and tickets have to be paid first and cleared before we can renew.
I got 30 day temporary tags and registration which expired on the 21st. I went through inspection, but failed. There is still alot of work to be done to the car. Since Maryland doesn’t give an extension on temp tags, is there a way to get that waivered? Also, how to get permanent tags once the temp tags expire?
hello there, there is no way that the inspection can be waived. Once the temp has expired you can no longer drive the vehicle until the tags are updated to full tags with a Maryland State inspected passed. You would to park the car until you can get it to pass. Once you’ve passed inspection, you would then take the inspection to a full service MVA or Tag and Title location to get the updated stickers. Only the stickers change. The hard tags and number remain the same.
We moved out of state and traded the vehicle in Arch’s no longer own it. My husband is Dolores but went round and round with the insurance division a few months ago after we received a threatening letter about not having insurance on the vehicle. The insurance case was closed after a few emails but apparently your system doesn’t update across the board as we now have received a registration renewal notice for the same vehicle. Can we ignore it since we don’t own the vehicle any longer?
Yes, ignore any notice about renewal if you traded in the vehicle.
