Zero emissions vehicles in MD; $63 million in funding
At the same time, the state is multiplying its EV charging network with the help of various infrastructure and discretionary grants. Right now, there are 1,348 charging stations with 3,772 outlets according to MDOT.

In September 2022, Maryland’s State Plan for National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) was approved. The NEVI Formula Program apportions about $63 million to Maryland between federal fiscal years 2022-2026, before any set-asides, with approximately $9.3 million allocated for 2022. MD is aiming to have EV charging station with at least four fast chargers every 50 miles along alternative fuel corridors and interstates, and within one mile of these highways.

Maryland is building part of a nationwide network of EV chargers along highway corridors to ensure long distance travel throughout the Old Line State is range anxiety-free. By 2025, the MDOT hopes to have 300,000 registered electric vehicles in the state.

And a decade later, Maryland wants all new vehicle sales to be electric. MD is already among the “Top 10 in the U.S.” for access to electric vehicle charging stations. Figures from the software firm, CoPilot, revealed Maryland has 56.4 EV chargers per 100,000 of population. By the end of March 2023, there were 11.3 electric cars registered per 1,000 people.

EV incentives for Marylanders

MD is the best state to own an EV
A Bumper study in 2022 based on 11 metrics on state electric vehicle infrastructure and financial incentives, Maryland took the #1 spot for best state to own an electric vehicle. Following Maryland, the top states are New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. MD also topped the charts for having the best financial incentives to own an EV; Arkansas comes in last. Finally, Maryland holds the top spot for the most affordable state to own an electric vehicle.
