We’re getting to the point here on our eTags blog when certain topics immediately inspire in us the sound of a drumroll. Really! Because we’ve had this one topic ongoing for some time, we’ve kind of become conditioned to get happy when we’re about to reveal a new character.

You may have guessed where we are going with this, but if not, we’ll get into the details, because the truth is, we love these deets! We’re back again today with another feature in our continuing Florida Specialty License Plate Spotlight Series, and as always, we are excited about it.
Here is a quick recap as to what a Specialty Plate is, and what our Spotlight series aims to do.
The State of Florida offers its regular license plates upon registering a car, truck, or SUV for the first time. This plate is the default setting for new registration…unless you know about the Specialty Plate Program. In addition to the official state tag, Florida also offers over one hundred other plates available for purchase. Each plate showcases a different design, a different style.
Some examples of the themes available in the Specialty Plate catalogue are: sports teams, military, education, health, wildlife, law enforcement, and environment to name a few. So, for instance, if you were a huge Miami Heat fan, instead of opting for the regular Florida tag, you could choose to upgrade to a Miami Heat Specialty Plate instead. Thereby displaying your love and support for your favorite team wherever your vehicle goes.
But the real beauty of the Specialty Plate Program is that behind each fun design is an opportunity to do some good in the world.
Regardless of which motif you choose, every Specialty Plate is the face of some sort of organization, foundation, or charity. And with each purchase of a Specialty Plate, the funds and proceeds are directed to the connected cause. So in effect, when you upgrade to a Specialty Plate you are automatically contributing to the charitable cause behind it. Hence, our love for this program and our ongoing presentation of such a cool idea.
So without further ado, this week’s Specialty Plate, the theme that gets its moment under our Spotlight is: State Wildflower.
The State Wildflower Specialty Plate is the face of the Florida Wildflower Foundation. This Foundation’s vision is that wildflowers are recognized as essential to Florida’s ecological health, economy, and natural beauty. Thus, they are on a mission to protect, connect, and expand native wildflower habitats. They do so through education, research, planting, and conservation.
With the funding that comes from their Specialty Plate, the Foundation can direct their attention to three main areas of concern:
- Planting and Conservation: Providing grants for wildflowers in schools as well as public spaces. Working within communities to identify and protect the naturally occurring roadside flowers.
- Education and Awareness: Giving folks the tools and knowledge required to create and maintain wildflower habitats on their private land as well as within their communities. This is done through education, events, and programs.
- Research: Supporting both academic and field research aimed at expanding habitat networks and increasing capacity within the native plant grower industry.
As we all became aware a few years back, there is a great need to maintain and care for the nation’s bee population. This is a massive part of the Foundation’s work: creating and protecting the flowers that feed the bees (and the butterflies), so that the bees can continue to feed us. And, if we’re honest about their importance to humanity, keep us alive.
The Florida Wildflower Foundation includes in its accomplishments:
- Teaming up with schools, nature centers, botanical gardens, as well as city, county, and state parks to initiate hundreds of wildflower plantings, thereby connecting people to the natural, native wonder of Florida.
- Developing an activity guide for classrooms so that children can learn about Florida’s unique flora and fauna.
- Helping to shape the policies that limit roadside mowing and designating dozens of new areas for the cultivation of wildflowers.
- Helping 33 counties and cities save their roadside wildflowers by way of adopting formal resolutions.
- Increasing general awareness of the public as to the importance of Florida’s native wildflowers.
The Foundation has teamed up with many different partners and sponsors, including Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Department of Agriculture, as well as the Florida Museum of Natural History.
While there are several ways to support this growing (get it?) cause, such as becoming a member, donating, getting involved in one of their webinars of community events, the easiest way is probably to upgrade to the State Wildflower Specialty Plate.
Why do we use the word upgrade? Well, because that’s what it is. You rise to the top with a fancy tag, and you don’t have to wait until your registration is up for renewal, or until you purchase a new ride. You read that right: you can upgrade to a Specialty Plate at any time. Whether you just bought a new whip, or you’re tired of your last tag, and regardless of when your renewal is due: you can opt for this fun and functional theme whenever you like.
The process of getting a Specialty Plate is super simple and fast, each step delineated clearly throughout.
Simply head on over to eTags, choose Florida as your state from our drop-down menu, and click on Renew + Specialty Plate. You may notice that there is also a little mention of Personalized Plate there. You know why? Because you can personalize your Specialty Plate too! As long as the DMV approves your letter and number combo, you can really leave your mark on the back of your vehicle…and on the environment.
