To review for our newcomers, here’s what the Florida Specialty Plate Spotlight Series is all about:
The state of Florida, in addition to its usual license plate issued for new vehicle registrations, also offers an exciting alternative to its standard tag: the Specialty Plate. With over one hundred unique and distinct designs to choose from, the variety offered to the Sunshine State residents is quite eclectic. The different motifs are all Florida-based, and range from sports teams (Miami Heat or Tampa Bay Lightning, for example) to environmental preservation (State Wildflower or Agriculture) to first responders (Salutes Firefighters or Support Law Enforcement) to educational institutions (Florida State University or University of Miami).
Florida vehicle owners are free to choose whichever plate suits them best, whatever displays their support, interest, or latest obsession. But the really cool thing about Specialty Plates is that in addition to being a fun way to fly your individual flag, they are meaningful as well.
We like to say: Florida Specialty Plates are more than just a pretty face.
You see, behind each original tag design there lies a cause. Say, for example, you love manatees and choose the Save the Manatee plate for your car, truck or SUV. You’re not just showing the world that you have an affinity for the gentle giant water creatures. In fact, you are supporting Florida’s programs to rescue, rehabilitate, and preserve both manatees and their natural environment.
How, you ask? Well, with each Specialty Plate purchased, a big portion (nearly all) of the proceeds goes directly to the charities and foundations associated with the plates theme. So in the case of the Save the Manatee plate, your choosing that design means that your money goes straight towards funding all the programs that support the lives and wellbeing of the manatee.
Meaning, that by the simple act of upgrading to Specialty Plate from a regular tag, your love for an animal (or team, or school, or research project, or law enforcement) immediately translates into your contribution to its welfare. And really, doing good for something that matters to you couldn’t get much easier than this. Get yourself a Specialty Plate = support a worthy cause. Cool, right?
So now that you’ve got an idea of how sweet this program is, let’s get on to today’s featured Specialty Plate. We’ve got a new tag for a new week, and this one is also a water baby. (Though we use this word “baby” verrrrry loosely!)
Drumroll, please…. Protect Florida Whales!
This tag, specially designed by marine artist, Wyland, supports the protection of several whale species found in Florida waters, and particularly protects the most endangered great whale of all – the North Atlantic right whale. Through the endeavor of public education and conversation, the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Foundation – affiliated with Florida Atlantic University (FAU) – aims to both protect and preserve the lives and habitats of the state’s whale population.
The Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute conducts ongoing studies of the North Atlantic right whale. One example of their work includes research projects fashioned to help scientists to understand the right whales better. The Institute has specialized in focusing on both the acoustic behavior and the social vocalizations of these great mammals.
In addition to scientific studies, the Institute also responds to whale strandings. In fact, FAU’s Harbor Branch has a dedicated on-call unit that operates 24/7 solely for emergency whale strandings and rescues. In terms of research, conservation, and emergency stranding response, Harbor Branch casts a wide blanket of care across the Florida whale community, including pilot and sperm whales in their roster.
So if you happen to have an affinity for whales and might have been considering purchasing a Protect Florida Whales Specialty Plate, perhaps you’ve got enough info now to solidify your decision.
Essentially, your individual love for whales translates into love for the species on a much greater scale.
And all you have to do is buy a cool license plate.
Now, how do you go about acquiring a Florida Specialty Plate, you ask? For starters, you’re in the right place. We don’t just feature this program because it’s cool and altruistic – those things matter, of course – but because we can help you get in on the game! Here’s how:
Head on over to our nifty little site, and choose Florida as your state of residence from our drop-down menu. From there you can choose “Renew + Specialty and/or Personalized Plate” OR “Get Specialty and/or Personalized Plate” from the list of services. But wait, you say, what’s all this about something Personalized?
Ah ha! This might just be the never-ending gift! Not only can you opt for a cool tag with a unique design that supports your favorite cause, but you can also personalize that tag. So if “Free Willy” has been your jam for the last umpteen years (we’re trying to not age ourselves here!), go on and make that your plate number. Or if you love humpbacks and need to flaunt it, throw together something like HB4LIFE. It’s up to you, friend. As long as the DMV approves of your letter/number combo, you’re good to go.
So, let’s recap here:
At any time during your registration period (yep – whether your registration is up for renewal or not, if you’re registering a vehicle for the first time, or whenever the fancy strikes you) you can opt to upgrade to a Specialty Plate. And with the purchase of this tag, you are automatically giving back. And not only that, but you can personalize it as well. And the eTags process could not be simpler – come see for yourself. Because as always: at eTags, we’re here to help!
