It doesn’t really matter how you feel about it as long as you are prepared for the unexpected. Just relax, don’t think too much, and be ready to follow instructions with attention and care.
Your instructor already knows how to handle first-timers so just rely on your guts as a driving candidate.
For that reason, here are 5 things to expect on your first driving lesson.
You’ll be asked to show your license
First and foremost, your instructor will ask you to show your license for identification and eligibility purposes. They don’t want to teach someone who’s not legally allowed to take in-car lessons.
It is also a way of reminding you that you’ll need to keep your license with you at all times.
In practice, police officers pull drivers over and the first thing they ask is for identification so keep that good habit with you.
The class won’t start with you sitting on the driver’s seat
If you are worried about your friends or neighbors recording your first behind-the-wheel lesson, you could just forget about it because you won’t be driving before learning the basics.
Your instructor will take you to a parking area or a quiet residential area where you could learn the basics. They know that you are feeling nervous about it so it makes perfect sense to start things slowly.
At this point your instructor will ask you to check the mirrors and test every feature of the vehicle, which is going to help you know how to handle them prior to hitting the road.
Be prepared for driving
You won’t get away with just sitting on the passenger seat checking things out. Your instructor will ask you to take the lead and drive once you feel comfortable.
Of course, his mission is to teach you the basic things to consider when driving along the road.
You’ll learn specific driving maneuvers and techniques that are going to be part of your life. Most of those techniques help you drive safely.
You’ll be switching seats constantly
Learning is not about just listening but practice. Don’t be surprised if your instructor asks you to switch seats regularly, as they try their best to teach you things the real way.
Usually instructors focus on performance to determine areas that need additional reinforcement.
It’s in your best interest to pay attention to topics such as; handling the steering wheel, checking blind spots, among others.
You won’t be asked to drive on the highway yet. Remember that your first day is just an introduction to the course where you’ll be driving around to get familiarized with the vehicle.
You’ll have the chance of asking questions
Take advantage of the course by asking as many questions as you wish, especially if you are concerned about your safety. It’s common to get confused about certain car features and techniques during the first lesson.
If you don’t feel comfortable about something, ask your instructor for further explanations. You could even ask them to show you how to operate certain things.
Learning is a process that takes time and practice so don’t be afraid of expressing your doubts. They won’t leave you alone and any mistake you make will be reported to you as feedback.

Hello Suska! All you need to do is practice and more practice until you feel confident about it.
