The state of Delaware could be one of the first adopters of mobile driver’s licenses. The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles has developed a mobile license pilot project that will assess the feasibility of this new option for six months.

This short-period project has gathered 200 state employees and other stakeholders to participate on this new initiative. John Carney, state Governor, said:
Delaware is among the first states to test a mobile driver’s license, and we’re excited to help move this new technology forward.
At the same time, Jennifer Cohan, Transportation Secretary, believes that this new pilot will be an opportunity for Delaware to know how mobile driver’s licenses actually work in real life scenarios. Cohan also said:
They will] address any issues that arise as a result before we decide to fully adopt and implement this application for our more than 800,000 licensed drivers and ID card holders.
This project idea comes from a study partnership between the Delaware DMV and IDEMIA. The latter is a company in charge of producing the in-state driver’s licenses and identification cards.

Check the key features
Below you will find some key features that were added to the mobile driver’s license in Delaware.
- Sophisticated age verification: Drivers won’t need to show their address, license number, and birth dates for verification. When it comes to age verification, the mobile driver’s license will show whether the person is over 18, or 21, and display a photo.
- Law Enforcement practices: It will be easier for officers to request driver’s license information with the use of a smartphone every time they stop a driver. Accessing that information saves time even before approaching the vehicle.
- Business operations: At times businesses require candidates to give proof of age, which will be easier from now on. They will just have to pull out age verification that is added to the mobile driver’s license.
- Convenience: It will be less complicated for people that participate in the pilot to present their mobile driver’s license to any organization.
- Security: This sophisticated driver’s license is easy to use and the license holder is the only able to access it. Note that license holders can access their information through an app on their phone. Simply, the owner needs to enter a pin code or use face recognition to unlock it.
Scott Vien, DMV Director, commented:
It is our responsibility to always bring the best-in-class offerings to our state and an mDL holds the promise of offering an always-updated, secure credential that will be easy to use by our consumers, businesses and law enforcement.
