For all the topics we discuss here on the eTags blog, we generally keep things relevant, of the moment, applicable to the daily lives of drivers and pedestrians, and any other beings sharing our roads. As you know, we are experts at getting your vehicle tagged and titled post haste. But we also love to keep up with all things automotive related.

Meaning, although we’re here to help you get your vehicle roadworthy – at superspeed – while keeping you away from long lines and missed appointments, we can’t help but get our noses stuck into rules, regulations, and trends. And while many of these last three can be quite focused and serious, today we’re going to lighten up our generally amiable mood even further.
Today, ladies and gentleman, we are going to highlight some of the weirdest, most bizarre – seemingly false, but apparently true – laws that exist in the good old U S of A. These are actually fun, and we had a pretty good time compiling these points. Okay, ready? We are too!
In no particular order, here goes:
In the state of California, it is illegal for women to drive a car while wearing a bathrobe. Nope, we’re not kidding. Women are forbidden to take the wheel if they are wearing any sort of dressing gown or robe.
In the state of Florida, it is illegal to park your vehicle on top of a grave inside a cemetery. In case you were planning on this, know that you will have to make other plans!
In Maryland, if someone hears you cursing or expressing any sort of rudeness while driving, you could face not only monetary fines, but actually being charged with a misdemeanor.
Out on Long Island, in the state of New York, the town of Sag Harbor has made it illegal to drive while nude. Kids, you gotta put on at least a pair of underpants if you’re going to cruise around this town!
If you’re driving in an area of the state of Wyoming where there are gates, and you either find one open, or you happen to open a gate, you are required to close that gate, or you could face fines of up to $750.
In the town of Marietta, Georgia, it is illegal to spit out the window of a car or bus. However, if you happen to be driving a truck, spitting is perfectly allowed. Go figure!
Apparently, there are so many comic book fans in the state of Oklahoma, that authorities had to ban the reading of comic books whilst operating a motor vehicle.
The state of Alabama, for reasons we could not source, has made an explicit law stating that it is forbidden to drive while blindfolded. We like this law. Why it had to become a law, we may never know.
In case you’re a speed demon, it might be fun to note that in the state of Virginia vehicle speed and radar detectors are illegal. So you might want to let up on that lead foot, eh?
Perhaps having nothing to do with Atlantic City at all (wink, wink), the state of New Jersey has put a prohibition on acquiring vanity plates for any person who has been issued a DUI in the past ten years. How’s that for a talking down.
To the dismay of children across the city of Indianola, Iowa, it is forbidden for any vehicle at all to sell ice cream. Kids, you will have to visit another town to hear the sweet siren call of the ice cream truck in summertime…
To the relief (we imagine) of potential taxi customers in Albuquerque, New Mexico, it is illegal for cab drivers to manually pull clients into their vehicles. Thank goodness, eh?
In the state of Utah, it’s not just other automobiles or pedestrians that might have the right of way. In Utah, drivers are required to stop for geese and other bird friends.
The state of Tennessee has made it an actual law that it is unlawful to sleep whilst driving. Good job, TN…we agree!
If you’re in the state of Missouri, beware that it is illegal to honk the horn of someone else’s car. So, no passenger or backseat driving for you, mister.
The town of Westminster, Colorado has banned pacing. Well, in a car anyway. It is illegal in this town to drive past the same location three times within three-hours. Time for a new route, huh.
In the state of Nevada, you are expressly forbidden from riding a camel on public highways. And furthermore, your pet camel is not allowed to roam said highways alone either. Camels are banned on Nevada highways…since the 1800’s!
If you’re heading to Hilton Head, South Carolina, you best be clean, friend. The town prohibits any garbage from being visible inside your vehicle. Because, yes, people are peering into your windows!
You’ll have to stay tidy in Minnetonka, Minnesota as well: driving a dirty, muddy vehicle in this town is considered a public nuisance.
Regardless of how hungry you might be, the state of West Virginia has declared it illegal to eat roadkill. In case you were considering it.
The state of Massachusetts has passed a law banning humans from transporting gorillas in the back seat of their vehicles. So, leave your gorilla at home, ok?
And on the subject of animals, Anchorage, Alaska prohibits you from strapping your dog to the roof of your car. Don’t even consider it. Law or no law, right?
In Illinois, you are forbidden from driving a car without a steering wheel. We’re not sure how’d you’d manage that anyway, but just in case, it’s illegal!
Shall we keep going? We sort of want to, because this is pretty dang fun, if you ask us. But we’ll take a pause to remind you that we’re actually here to serve! For all things title related – transfers, duplicates, replacements – and all things tag related – renewals, new registrations, stickers etc: we’ve got your back. Because as always, here at eTags, we’re here to help!
