For the most part, planning is key and you should be mentally and physically prepared for it. Here you’ll learn how to plan a road trip to take advantage of the holidays.
Buckle up and bask away on a road trip that cannot be disrupted because you are in charge. Note that you’ll need to create a checklist of items to consider before hitting the road.
Either you are a first-time excurtionist or a experienced road-tripper, your adventure requires careful planning and that’s about it.
Follow maintenance checks
- Check your tire pressure for the season
- Check your wiper blades
- Ensure your windshield washer reservoir is filled
- Test the battery of your vehicle
Be proactive. Have some time to check on your vehicle repair checklist and do not let unexpected things take you by surprise.
Carry an emergency road kit
Depending on the season, you should make sure your emergency road kit has the following:
- First aid kit
- Ice Scrapper
- Cables
- Traction Mats
- Small Shovel
- Flashlights
- Rags or paper towels
- Water and healthy snacks
- Warm/fresh clothes
- Basic toolset
- Phone chargers

Use a map
It is so inconvenient to start figuring where to stop or turn when you are not familiar with the route. Plan your route before hitting the road and look for alternative roads in case there’s a lot of traffic congestion.
If you have a passenger, let him map your route to avoid getting lost or stuck with heavy traffic. Now, people can use their smartphones to look at the map and use features that help drivers find their way.
Look at the weather
Either you are driving on wet roads or facing heavy snow conditions, plan your trip and bring the items you need to help you mitigate road obstacles.
Sometimes weather conditions cause more traffic on the road, so use your map to identify some alternative routes to avoid being stuck and stay safe.
Paying attention to the weather also helps drivers be prepared to get to their destination safely. Look at the weather maps and handle every season proactively.
Weather.com, for example, is a useful tool for road-trippers.
Keep your kids safe
Get a proper child seat for your vehicle. If you are not sure which one to buy, check on your car manual as it shows the measurement requirements. Remember they need to seated straight and buckled up.
Another thing is to keep them entertained with whatever keeps them calm and comfortable, including: snacks, tablets, or toys.
Make stops during your road trip
Plan few stops to help you relax if your road trip requires you to be focused for hours. Note that it is advisable to take some breaks, get off the vehicle, and stretch for optimal blood circulation.
You could also get mentally exhausted from holding the wheel and focusing on the road. That said, if you have any other licensed adult as a passenger, let him/her take over until you feel ready to carry on.
