Online Driver’s License Renewal
Nebraska has recently expanded their online renewal systems and many times you will be eligible for this time-saving option.
There are a few reasons that you might be required to renew in person, but most drivers will be able to simply renew through the Nebraska DMV online license renewal website.
In order to renew online you will need:
- Valid email address and telephone number.
- Checking account or credit card including Mastercard, VISA, or Discover Card.
- Any change of address documentation and the ability to upload the form.
It can take up to 20 days to receive your new license by mail, so if you are approaching your expiration date, this would not be a recommended or available option.
If you need to update your photo or physical description due to a change in height, weight, and eye color, then you will need to do it in person.
Renewing a License In Person
To renew your driver’s license in person you will first need to find the nearest Nebraska DMV location.
There is at least one in every county throughout the state but you are not required to use the one in your county to renew.
Scheduling a DMV Appointment to Renew Your License
Hours of operation can vary, with some locations being open only for a few hours a week on one or two days. It is best to call ahead to verify when they are available to help you.
The locations in larger cities and towns have more convenient hours if in person license renewal seems to be the best option for you.
Required License Renewal Documents and Forms
When renewing your license in person, you will need to provide the following required documents or forms:
- Completed driver’s license renewal application form. You will get one in the mail 30 days before your license expires, or can download a copy here.
- Valid state ID or current driver’s license with your name and date of birth.
- Two forms with proof of address.
Check the Nebraska DMV website for a complete list of approved identification and verification of address that will be accepted.
When Does My Nebraska Driver’s License Expire?
Except for those issued prior to your 21st birthday, all driver’s licenses are valid for 5 years and expire on your birthday.
A license issued to a new driver under the age of 21 will be due to expire on their 21st birthday.
Required License Renewal Fees in Nebraska
There is always a $2.50 processing fee attached to any license change, including renewal.
A five-year license will cost $24, but if you are under 21 and will have your new operator license less than five years, you can pay for a one, two, or three-year license starting at just $7.50.
Renewing Your License Out-of-State
If you expect to be out of the state when your license is due to expire, it is possible to have it renewed early and through the mail. Give the DMV a call to verify all requirements.
You may have to have a vision test done in addition to completing all other paperwork. It is possible to renew up to 90 days before your expiration if needed.
Graduated Driver’s License Requirements for Renewal
