For our newbies to the blog, we’re going to introduce one of our favorite subjects. We’ve dedicated this space -alternating with other hot topics- to an ongoing series called the Florida Specialty License Plate Series. What is this, you wonder? It’s a fantastic program, and we’ll explain the whole shebang.
In addition to the regular license plate you might get when registering a car, truck, or SUV for the first time, the State of Florida also offers over one hundred (100) other plates, each with a unique design and theme. There are plates of different colors, compositions, and layouts. There are far too many to mention in one article, but some very popular designs include: Endless Summer, Helping Sea Turtles Survive, Miami Heat, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and many, many more.
Fun fact: as of September 1, 2024, there were 2,199,003 Specialty Plates in circulation in the state of Florida.
Yep, you read that correctly: over two million of these tags displayed on vehicles across the Sunshine State. So there must be something exceptional about this program, right?
Each Specialty Plate is, well, special. And not only because of its façade. Sure, you get to demonstrate your love for a sports team, or your interest in the environment, or your obsession with all things Disney. Yes, displaying a Specialty Plate gives your vehicle a little flair. And yes, there is a slightly higher cost to purchase a special tag. But there’s more to the picture than a cute registration placard.
You see, behind the pretty face of every Specialty Plate lies a cause.
Each plate, each theme represents not only a sports team or a military branch or an agricultural interest. Behind the plate is an organization, a foundation, a charity. And when you elect one design or another, you are, in fact electing to support the charity associated with that particular motif. So regardless of which style Specialty Plate you opt for, you are automatically contributing to the cause connected to the theme of the plate.
Let’s make this even more clear by introducing this week’s Florida Specialty Plate, the one that’s receiving all the love and attention of our Spotlight. This week our featured tag is the Support Law Enforcement plate. And here’s what happens when you decide to upgrade to this design.
The Support Law Enforcement Specialty Plate is available throughout the state and is open to all Florida residents. While displaying this tag on your vehicle clearly demonstrates solidarity with local, county, city, and state police outfits, it goes a few steps further. The revenue from the sale of each Support Law Enforcement plate is then directed to the Florida Police Benevolent Association Heart Fund (FPBA).
And what is this association, you ask?
The FPBA is a collective of professionals and past law enforcement officers who strive to protect the rights of police men and women, as well as community officials.
They help promote professionalism and establish a positive identity across the state and across the country.
FPBA Heart Fund is a charitable organization that benefits the families of law enforcement, correction officers, and correctional probation officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The charity supports the surviving family members, assisting them via financial means.
In addition, part of the proceeds from the Support Law Enforcement plate are directed through the FPBA Heart Fund towards benefiting officers who have become permanently disabled due to an injury incurred while serving and protecting the people. The money collected through this fund helps provide benefits to those who have suffered while on the job.
Basically, you can’t really get more of a win-win that opting for a Specialty Plate. You get to show the world whose team you’re on, and not only are you sharing that love, but you’re also actually contributing to the cause behind the design. And just when you thought things couldn’t get better, there is this: you can choose to personalize your Specialty Plate too!
Whether your best friend is a police officer, and you want her nickname on your plate, or if it’s your pup that’s captured your heart and you want the world know it…regardless of what letter and number combo you’d like, as long as it is approved by the DMV, you can follow your dreams here.
A Specialty Plate plus a personalized identification…it’s like a plus-plus and a win-win.
If only the good news stopped there: you’d be happy, we’d be happy. But in the vein of all great things: wait, there’s more! You don’t have to wait to buy a new vehicle to get a Specialty Plate. You don’t have to wait for your registration renewal to come up either. You can choose to upgrade from a regular Florida tag to a Specialty Plate at any time during your registration period.
