If you’re like most road trippers, you’re probably in your post-college years. Talking is great, sure, but a little entertainment never hurt when you’ve got (likely) double-digit hours to kill. Between all the card games, DVDs, and offline Steam games played on a Chromebook, fresh entertainment can be difficult to conjure. But, no need to fret.
There are fun adult road trip games out there.
If you’re on a budget, or if you’re over online gaming in the car, check out these cool road trip games. They’re not exactly Words With Friends but they’re certainly entertaining for those a little (or not so much) more mature.
Smurfing
Pick a guesser. They put their hands over their ears. Then, everyone else decides upon a verb. The “guesser” removes their hands. The guesser is allowed to ask questions about the verb—only they need to call it smurfing. As a result, you’ll see questions like:
- When was the last time you’ve smurfed?
- Is it appropriate to smurf right now?
- Can you smurf outside?
It’s a pretty fun game, and it can result in some entertaining conversations.
Who Am I?
For this one, you’ll need a post-it note and a pen. Write the name of someone famous—or a fiction character—on the note. Put it on someone’s forehead. Then, the same person needs to ask yes or no questions to figure out the person’s identity. The fewer questions asked, the more points!
The Movie Game
This game is simple, but it’s a blast for movie buffs. One person names an actor. A second person names a movie they were in. Then, the first person names another actor in that movie. The process goes back and forth until someone can’t answer.
The Vehicle Call-Out Game
In this game, the objective is to identify an oncoming car—or truck—make and model. Whoever calls out the identifying features first wins. This game is really fun at night, as oncoming headlights make the vehicle hard to identify.
The ABC Game
This game might be from your childhood, but it’s fun when you’re older, too. Find signs starting with every letter of the alphabet. You need to start with A. If you’re playing with multiple people, give a point to people whenever they score a sign. At the end of the game, round up the points to see who’s won.
The Four Yorkshiremen Monty Python Game
Straight from a Monty Python script, the Four Yorkshiremen game is great for long-haul trips. One person tells a fact about how hard it was growing up. Then, the next person tries to “one up” them. Then, another person goes. Eventually, you’ll wind up telling tales of childhood—bonding over a car full of misery. Well, it’s fun for some people. Just make sure you’re all okay with sharing gritty details.
Guess the Quote
In this game, one person says a quote from a movie, a television show or a song. Then, everyone else needs to guess it. Whoever guesses the quote’s origin first gets a point.
Guess the Song
If you’re in a car of song buffs, try this game on for size. One person changes the radio until a song they know comes on. Then, the game starts. Whoever guesses the song’s name, and artist, first wins! This game can go on for hours, and it’s a great way to learn new music.
Use Ask Reddit
Go to Reddit.com and go to the Ask ‘Sub-Reddit’. Sort the questions by most popular and start asking questions from the top. You’ll be surprised by some of the answers your car-mates will have. If you feel insecure about your answers, browse the comments section and quickly regain your confidence.
Dungeons and Dragons
No, you don’t need to have the driver rolling dice in the car. You can, however, have a passenger play the role of Dungeon Master while the rest roll dice. Go easy on the driver, and make a small game which doesn’t need too many maps.
These might be adult road trip games by trade, but most are also suitable for children.
That said, the kids might not be as sharp (yet) with some options. Pack up some dice, bring your music game and have a smartphone with service. The rest is up to you.
