If it’s non-motorized and you can tow it with your own vehicle, it’s probably a trailer. The trailer title and registration details below are for trailers with Connecticut titles, not for out-of-state, as those have a few different requirements such as a VIN verification.
Most trailers are registered as camp trailers in Connecticut
Connecticut Trailer insurance coverage
If you’re using your trailer for personal use, the state of Connecticut doesn’t require you to have it insured. But the vehicle towing it must carry auto insurance. The liability coverage will extend and protect you in case you’re responsible of injuries and damages when pulling the trailer.
One thing to note though is that if there’s equipment theft or weather-related damages, you won’t be covered through insurance since those aren’t collision/accident-related.
Trailer title Form H-13B
To ensure you’re listed as the owner of your newly-bought trailer, the seller must sign the title over to you. Your title is your proof of ownership. To legally transfer and register the title to yourself, you must complete a Connecticut registration and title application knows as Form H-13B.
You may be able to use the previous registration as title
If you bought your trailer in Connecticut, and it’s newer than 20 model years, the proof of ownership is your title. But if it’s an older model, before the year 2003, you can use the previous owner’s registration instead of the title.
There’s a sales tax on the trailer registration too
The trailer weight makes a difference
You won’t need a title for your trailer if it weighs less than 3,000 pounds, like a small travel trailer or utility one. Unloaded weight is generally between 2,000-4,000 pounds. For more context…A large travel trailer like one you’d take on a road trip is typically over 4,500 pounds. A 5th wheel camper weighs almost 13,000 pounds.
Don’t forget the bill of sale, also known as Form H-31, which will have the seller’s name and price, as well a full description including color and model year

To recap, to title and register your Connecticut trailer
• you must have the seller sign over the title to you
• you must have a bill of sale
• you must complete Form H-31
• You must have a form of identification like CT driver’s license
If you owe property taxes or have unpaid parking tickets, you won’t be able to register your trailer

My husband and I just purchased a travel trailer, over 5000lbs. With the original sales paperwork we only used his name. Now we decided to add my name to the registration. How complicated is this and what information is needed?
If the transfer was already completed and the new title and registation was issued in his name, you would need to effectively process another transfer to add your name. If the transfer after the same has not been completed, you could request that the dealership or seller provide update the title to add your name to the seller section(s) and provide new paperwork (bill of sale, etc).
If I am purchasing a horse trailer from ct that is – 2002 over 2500 lbs and I live in nj. The trailer is currently registered and has a title. What do I need to do in legally transport it back to nj
I have a few homemade trailers that have been registered in the last but lost the the registration forms from a few years ago. What would I need to do to get new registration forms?
If you already registered those trailers and simply need replacement registrations, you can request a reprint online on the CT DMV website.
My Father had a 2001 under 3k LB enclosed utility trailer Registered in Fl. Last registration date was 2022. He signed the last Registration/Bill of Sale section over to Me. I see no title is required, however will it still need a vin check as the reg is FL?
Since your trailer is under 3k lbs, there is no title and the transferrable registration will serve as the proof of ownership. You will need a Q1 Form which you can either request at a DMV office or request one be mailed to you. A VIN inspection will be required in CT in order to complete the registration process. This can be done at any licensed emissions inspection station (although trailers do not need emissions inspections).
We just purchased a trailer from Virginia that has the title and bill of sale. It’s a 2015 that’s 1000 pounds.
We need CT plates and registration for it. I’ve read conflicting things online. Do we need a VIN verification and/or a trailer inspection? Also, do we need a temporary registration before doing the VIN verification and trailer inspection before getting the official plates/registration? Thanks!
A VIN inspection will be required for you to register your trailer in CT. An emissions inspection is not required for trailers. You don’t need a temporary registration although you may apply for one at any DMV office if you need to transport the trailer for the VIN inspection.
I bought a trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating of 2990lbs. He gave the the mco and bill of sale from him to me. He never registered it and the back of the mco was signed by dealer but buyer info is blank. Do I put the original owners name in buyer on mco and use my bill of sale from original owner to me ? What forms would I need to register it.
Hello there, the question is a bit confusing. It is not clear how many people are involved and if dealer is. Pls restate and send our way so we can help
purchased a brand new 2023 trailer with title from dealership out if state so i have bill of sale and title is that all I need besides form h13-b
Brand new from dealer should have MCO (Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin). You’ll also need a vin verification, but only if you have a title and not MCO. You’ll need the Bill of Sale, H13 plus your CT license or out of state license that’s been registered in CT.
I have a homemade trailer I need to register. Can I register it in CT if I’m an out of state resident and if so how would I do it with no title since it’s homemade?
To register a trailer that’s less than 3,000 lbs. you won’t need a title. Regardless of weight though, since it’s homemade you’ll have to have it inspected and have a VIN assigned at a DMV Safety Inspection location to complete registration.
I built and have a small trailer about 500 lbs. GVW
I built this trailer from scrap metal that I got while working for an elevator company in Conn. (Alimak)
I have been using this trailer as a yard trailer behind a tractor for years but now would like to use it to haul scrap to our town dump.
The trailer has on road tires and lights
I would now like to get it registered in CT. but do not have a clue where and how to.begin. I have no title and the parts were acquired from scrap except for the trailer lighting which was purchased from Amazon.
Can this forum help with pointing me in the right direction to get a temporary plate and how to properly register so I can bring for a safety inspection?.
For temporary plates and more info that can help with your specific situation, check out this page from the CT DMV
Hello,
So I bought a trailer in CT 2021 but only bill of sale. No registration or Title what do I need please to register under my name thank you.
If it weighs under 3k pounds, there is no title and you would need a Q1 form plus the registration card from the previous owner.
I if i register my new utility trailer on line.how do i get the license plate does it need avin check check and if so how do i get there without a plate
eTags doesn’t issue temporary plates. You might need a vin verification, depends on where the trailer was titled previously. Visit the CT DMV website and select Temporary Registration for more information. You can get a temporary vehicle registration if you need to get a safety inspection and/or emissions test but do not yet have your permanent registration.
MY HUSBAND WAS GIVEN A SMALL TOW BEHIND TRAILER FROM A FRIEND . NO BILL OF SALE BECAUSE NO MONEY EXCHANGE. I HAVE THE LAST REGISTRATION FROM THE PREVIOUS OWNER, WHICH ENDED 2013.
MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY AND A NEIGHBOR WANTS TO PURCHASE IT.
MY HUSBAND NEVER REGISTERED IT BECAUSE HE BECAME ILL.
WHAT DO I HAVE TO HAVE TO SELLIT TO MY NEIGHBOR.?
HOW DO I PRESENT MY NAME ON THE BILL OF SALE?
CT doesn’t give titles for trailers under 3k pounds or vehicles over 20 years old that lost them. In this case, if the trailer had no title, the person who gave your husband the trailer would have had to give his last reg and a Q1 form which has to be gotten from their dmv, it’s not available online. Because your husband never registered it, the last registrant would need to get a Q1 and sign it leaving the buyer section blank so you can have her buyer fill it in as if the original guy is selling it to the new owner
Can I register my camper through etag
Hello there, yes you can register your camper with eTags. Just select your state and answer a few questions online. Thanks for your business.
The title to my trailer is missing. It was previously registered in Vermont, which tells me that they will not replace the title, as the trailer is over 15 years old. I have the registration and can provide a bill of sale to hopeful buyers in CT. Is that enough for them to register it in CT? Tia.
Hello
If the trailer is older then 2003, the buyer should be able to register the trailer with the registration.
What to do if you were given a trailer from a state which doesn’t title trailers?
If a trailer is bought out of the state of CT and has a GVWR of 7000. This manufactured trailer is a 2023 with a VIN. What paperwork is needed to register this in the state of CT?
For CT services, eTags only processes new or transferred registrations as part of a title transfer order, so you’d need to place a title transfer with new registration order online. You’ll need to submit Bill of Sale
CT ID, Title/ Certificate of Origin and get VIN verification.
