If you are a resident of Southern California and the owner of an electric vehicle, you might qualify for a $450 credit from Southern California Edison, a utility company. The rebate is part of and funded by the California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard Program in effect through 2020.

The Low Carbon Fuel Standard Program is investing in encouraging the use of cleaner, low-carbon fuels in multiple ways. This includes the production, transportation, and use of a given fuel. Many business can participate in the program which is what SCE has done. In essence, SCE is passing on the rebate or savings to their customers. You can learn more about the program here. To qualify and apply, you will need to:
- Own an EV or PEV as defined by California’s Drive Clean Resource Center.
- Be a customer of Southern California Edison and have or create an online account. You must, of course, be in a SCE service area to be a customer.
- Submit your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) which appears on your registration or insurance card.
- Upload a copy of your California car registration certificate. If you have completed a California car registration renewal with eTags before, you will have a digital copy of your registration card, or eTag, available for download by visiting eTags.com/status.
Once approved, you will receive an email confirming this and the check will be mailed to your SCE service address. The wait time is approximately 10 to 12 weeks to get the check but, for the time spent applying, it’s still a good deal. Each household qualifies for the rebate once per vehicle but each vehicle itself can qualify for the rebate up to 3 times. That is, if you sell the vehicle within the time the program is running to someone who is also an SCE customer, they may apply for the rebate as well. Additionally, if you own multiple EVs/PEVs, you can apply for a rebate for each one even though they are registered to the same household.
It’s also important to know that this rebate is a little different from other rebate programs available in California. If you have researched buying an electric vehicle, you might already be aware of California’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Project applies to new electric vehicles purchases only. The Southern California Edison rebate from the Low Carbon Fuel Standard Program is different as it applies to pre-owned electric vehicles as well.
If you own an electric vehicle and live in Southern California, are an SCE customer, and own an electric vehicle, this rebate might be something to check out.
