Driving defensively is the norm and safety campaigners keep raising awareness against erratic driving.
But there are times when you can’t help spotting terrible drivers around you, getting closer and obnoxious.
You try your best to keep your distance but it is never that easy. Road users make mistakes regardless of their experience, the type of vehicle they drive, and their ability to remain focused.
In light of safety driving, let us show you how to avoid terrible drivers while raising awareness for safety on the roads.
Stay in the right lane
Do not switch to the passing (left) lane unless you are planning to pass other vehicles. How many times have you spotted slow drivers delaying other drivers for their lack of knowledge?
At the same time, if you stay in the right lane, you’ll be taking your distance from other drivers who may give in to speeding.
Terrible drivers usually swerve between lanes so move to the right lane, reduce your speed, and look around to detect those drivers on time.
No more distractions
It takes just few seconds to crash owing to a distraction. In fact, distracted driving has been widely discussed and local authorities take the lead by legislating and raising awareness.
Activities including texting/calling while driving, eating/drinking while driving, zoning out, among others are the ingredients to a fatality.
Though there are an increasing number of people opting for multi-tasking. It goes without saying that distracted drivers are easy to identify. They react slowly and their eyes may not be on the road.
Aggressive drivers are terrible drivers
Aggressive drivers are miles away from being safe. You could find squeezing between lanes to go through an intersection.
Or they could be involved in racing to prevent other drivers from passing them. They want to be the first one reaching their destination and they would engage in road rage otherwise.
If you spot one, move out of their lane and increase your distance between them and your vehicle. Consider using alternate routes if that helps you feel safer.
Get a dash-cam
It’s always practical and beneficial to get a dash-cam. You don’t when the next incident is going to occur and you’ll need to be prepared.
Sometimes you could even use your camera to help other drivers deal with terrible drivers after an accident, including a hit and run.
The affected road user will be grateful for your support and you’ll be aiding authorities reducing the number of erratic people on the road.
Talk to your kids
Your kids, particularly teenagers, will be the motorists of the future. Are you giving them all the tools and advices they need to improve their safety?
Teen drivers who fail to prioritize safety while driving contribute to the alarming crash rates in the country.
You may find them drunk driving, engaging with their passengers, and/or demonstrating poor driving skills which can be tough to address.
If you spot dangerous young drivers, you could either report them to your local authorities or let someone you trust do the job for you given the rules in your local state.
Keeping the roads crash-free is a goal that should be targeted with care and responsibility.
