Once you cancel insurance though, the DMV will be notified so its important that you notify your state's DMV that the insurance was canceled. Depending on the state, you may be able to call, mail, or send online notice of the insurance cancellation. In most states, the plate can stay on the car until you are ready to drive it again or sell it. As it pertains to the renewal of the registration, check with your state's requirements to avoid any late penalties.
