The CA DMV does not offer extensions, per say, but they do offer programs around smog requirements.
- There are exemptions, such as if you are located outside of the state of CA when a smog test is required.
- The CA DMV also offers a temporary operating permits related to smog requirements; more information here: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle...
- You may qualify for a repair cost waiver if your vehicle failed the smog test and you need assistance with the cost to make the necessary repairs. More information here: https://asktheref.org/services/repair-cost-waivers/
An important thing to note is that you can pay your registration fees without having a completed/passed smog test. If your registration is soon expiring or already expired, you should pay the regiration fees to avoid the continued accumulation of late penalties. However, your registration sticker won't be shipped out until you have proof of passed smog test.
