As long as the plate was not canceled, you should be able to transfer it to another car which will save you $225 in new plate fees. Its also important to note that, since the car has been sitting idle for several years and assuming insurance was canceled on that vehicle, the DMV needed to receive a notice that the car was in-operable. Failing to have done so may have lead to an insurance related stop and law enforcement notice to seize the plates which would not allow you to transfer the plates.
